1. Multiple spindle automatics and
chuckers with plain or universal threading.
Tapping with the UNI-TAP attachments in machines equipped with plain or
universal threading requires that the UNI-TAP
attachment be equipped with a stub shank. The stub shank is inserted into the threading
spindle of the machine in the same
manner as a diehead or conventional tap holder, and the UNI-TAP body is held stationary.
2. Multiple spindle automatics and
chuckers with accelerated reaming or drilling attachments.
For multiple spindle automatics and chuckers with accelerated reaming or
drilling attachments, the UNI-TAP attachment
must be equipped with a housing adaptor for insertion into the accelerating holder and
rear drive nut.
3. Multiple spindle automatics and chuckers
having no provision for acceleration of tools
independant of the tool slide.
The UNI-TAP shank must be rotated at a speed 60 to 90 % of the speed of the part to be
threaded, with rotation in the
same direction. UNI-TAP must be moved independantly of the main tool slide.
The UNI-TAP attachment can be used on all types of machines that rotate the workpiece
and have provision for rotating
a spindle co-axially with the workpiece. The attachment uses a planetary bevel gear system
that produces a 2 to 1 speed
ratio, which is transferred through positive drive clutching to initially drive the tap in
the same direction as the workpiece,
but at a lower speed. This allows UNI-TAP to cut threads at a speed that is the difference
between that of the workpiece
and the tap. When the attachment body is withdrawn, the second higher speed ratio is
engaged, which drives the tap faster than the workpiece, still in the same direction, thus
unscrewing the tap from the part. Very accurate thread depths are
achieved because the clutching is in the tool area. Other features of the UNI-Tap
attachment include self-feeding and axial
float. The unit's modular design makes it ideally suited for most popular models of
multiple spindle automatics and chuckers.
The UNI-TAP attachment has three operating modes.
1. Tapping Mode -The output speed is
governed by the position of the UNI-TAP body relative to the tapping spindle.
In the tapping mode the spindle is positioned toward the UNI-TAP body, engaging a clutch
which drives directly from
the spindle.
2. Neutral Mode -When the tap has reached
the proper depth in the workpiece, the UNI-TAP attachment shifts into
neutral and allows the tap to rotate with the workpiece.
3. Tap Withdrawal Mode -Retraction of the
UNI-TAP attachment spindle engages the mechanism and the tap speed increases to twice that
of the input speed. This, in effect, withdraws the tap from the workpiece. When the
spindle returns
to the normal postition (Mode 1), this clutch disengages and the UNI-TAP attachment is
ready for the next workpiece.
Models 4X, 12X and 18X UNI-TAP are mounted with a stub shank adaptor directly into any plain or universal threading spindle on any size or type of rotating multiple spindle automatic chucker.
Left hand threading is available. Please consult factory.
